Essay contests with closing dates from October 2026 to January 2027

Short answer

Essay contests publish their own closing dates: the 917 Society, Writer's Digest and Hektoen International all close on October 1, 2026. Immerse Education closes on October 25, 2026 and Lumiere Education on December 20, 2026, while Oxford Agora, listed with free entry for ages 11 to 18, closes on January 31, 2027. Entry is by email from a teacher, through a submission form or through a local VFW Post.

Closing dates for essay contests, and the route each one names

The 917 Society asks teachers to submit student essays by email by October 1, 2026. Writer's Digest lists the same day as the deadline for its Personal Essay Awards, and Hektoen International requires submissions through the form on its page by 11:59 PM CST on October 1, 2026. Three organisers share one date and use routes that differ: a teacher's email, an awards page and an on-page form.

Immerse Education's essay competition closes on October 25, 2026, and its page calls that the deadline for the current round. Lumiere Education's essay award takes submissions until 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on December 20, 2026. Oxford Agora, run by Oxford Global Education, is listed with free entry, ages 11 to 18 and worldwide reach, and it closes on January 31, 2027.

Two Veterans of Foreign Wars programmes run through local posts instead of a central form. VFW Voice of Democracy entrants submit an audio essay with a completed entry form to a participating local VFW Post, and VFW Patriot's Pen entrants submit an essay with a completed 2026-2027 entry form to the same kind of post. A contest near me is a contest with a place in its route, and only the VFW programmes have one here.

A writing contest online is entered through a form or an email, and the route is part of the rules. A platform name in a listing, such as a writing contest Reedsy is attached to, says where a contest was found and nothing about its deadline, length limit or entry terms, which sit on the organiser's own page. Essay contest scholarships follow the same pattern: money is added to the stakes and the mechanics stay put.

Six closing dates in the table run from October 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, each written on the organiser's own clock.

Poetry contests: line limits, forms and translations

Poetry Nation sets its limits by the line: entries must be at least 3 lines and no more than 26 lines, and no line can exceed 55 characters including spaces between words. Freethought Day's Poetry Scholarship sets its limit by the form: the entry must be a traditional haiku of 5, 7 and 5 syllables, and applicants can submit only one entry.

Freethought Day requires content to be shared by August 31 at 11:59 PM PT of the current year and awards a fixed sum to each of up to ten favorite entries that reflect on its theme. Power Poetry's scholarship slams place no language restrictions on entries, profanities included, and require a foreign-language poem to include an English translated version.

Power Poetry's slams and Freethought Day's Poetry Scholarship show what a scholarship poetry contest asks: one poem or one haiku per entrant, inside a stated window. The National Poetry Competition widens the frame, accepting entries on any subject, and charges for subsequent entries in the same submission.

Every poetry entry named here is a single poem or a haiku. Anyone weighing a poetry contest book or a full manuscript needs the organiser's separate rules, which this page does not cover.

Canada: residency lines, word limits and a deadline without a year

An essay contest Canada offers to school-age writers still applies a residency rule. The Vancouver Writers Fest elementary school youth writing contest is open to writers in grades 5 to 7 who attend a school or are taught in a home-school environment in British Columbia, and it accepts previously unpublished short stories and personal essays.

Word limits split by school level: 1,000 words for elementary school submissions and 1,500 words for high-school submissions, so high schoolers in that contest write longer than the grade 5 to 7 entrants. The contest is organized every year in spring, which makes it a writing contest BC families can plan around.

The Canadian Authors National Capital Region page lists the Write on the Lake Writing Contest with a May 31 deadline. A deadline printed as a month and a day with no year attached says little until the organiser's own page confirms which year it belongs to.

UK essay competitions and the Year 12 pattern

A writing contest UK organisers run states its closing time in UK time, as the Oxford Royale Essay Competition did: entries had to be submitted by 23:59 UK time on 6th January 2025, winners were to be notified by 23:59 UK time on 31st January 2025, and only one entry per person was permitted.

The Think Essay Prize measures age on the closing date: entrants must be aged 15 to 18 by that day. BBC 500 Words 2026/27 states that spelling, punctuation and grammar are not marked, a marking rule an entrant cannot guess.

Essay competitions UK pupils enter cluster around one school year. Minds Underground says its competitions are aimed at Year 12 but open to younger applicants. Among the essay competitions Year 12 students are offered, North Eastern University London is running one for students in year 12 and Fitzwilliam College Cambridge runs annual contests for Year 12 students.

Year numbering changes at the border. The Estelle Prize for English is open to Year 12 pupils in England and Wales, S5 pupils in Scotland and Year 13 pupils in Northern Ireland, and the Trinity College Cambridge Languages & Cultures Essay Prize is for Year 12 or Lower 6th students, one more label for the same stage.

Who can enter: age lines for students and adults

College students are a different audience from the Year 12 pupils that college-run competitions target. Fitzwilliam College and Trinity College, Cambridge run essay prizes for Year 12 students, so a college name in a sponsor's title says nothing about whether college students are eligible.

The Brain Power essay contest sorts entrants by grade into Junior (Grades 4-6), Intermediate (Grades 7-8) and Senior (Grades 9-12) divisions, so a Grade 8 student competes with Grade 7 and 8 peers and not with a Grade 12 entrant.

Adults read the age line first. Oxford Agora is for ages 11 to 18, the Think Essay Prize for ages 15 to 18, and the Vancouver Writers Fest elementary contest for grades 5 to 7, so an adult needs a contest whose rules set no age band, and only the organiser's page shows whether one is set.

For a minor's entry, the rules worth finding first say whether a parent or guardian consents or submits on the entrant's behalf. The VFW programmes address students directly, and The 917 Society routes student essays through teachers, which are two different answers to the question of who acts for a young entrant.

Entry fees, free entry and the limits of a prize

Oxford Agora lists free entry, and the National Poetry Competition charges for subsequent entries in the same submission, so one contest costs nothing to enter and another prices its later poems. The entry-fee line belongs in the published rules, next to the deadline.

A prize is narrow by design. The New Quarterly's personal essay contest awards a prize for one essay, and its 2026 contest is now closed. Freethought Day's poetry scholarship awards a fixed sum to each of up to ten favorite entries. Entering gets an entrant a read by the organiser and a chance at those places, and no rule on this page attaches a placing to an entry.

A contest with no named organiser, no dated deadline and no statement on entry fees deserves doubt. Every organiser named on this page states at least one rule an entrant can check in its own text.

Rules that make an entry ineligible

Eligibility rules in these contests are literal. The National Poetry Competition says poems that have already been published are not eligible to win and requires the entrant's original work. Power Poetry allows one poem per user for each scholarship slam, the Oxford Royale Essay Competition permitted only one entry per person, and Freethought Day limits applicants to one entry.

Length and form rules bind in the same way: Poetry Nation entries cannot exceed 26 lines or 55 characters per line, and Freethought Day accepts only a traditional haiku of 5, 7 and 5 syllables. Deadlines add a clock, and each organiser states its own: 11:59 PM CST at Hektoen International, 11:59 PM PT at Freethought Day, 23:59 UK time at the Oxford Royale Essay Competition.

Step by step

  1. The closing date and its clock

A deadline is a date plus a clock: Hektoen International closes at 11:59 PM CST on October 1, 2026, Lumiere Education at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on December 20, 2026, Freethought Day at 11:59 PM PT on August 31, and the Oxford Royale Essay Competition ran to 23:59 UK time on 6th January 2025.

  2. Email, form or local post

The route is part of the rules: The 917 Society takes essays that teachers send by email, Hektoen International takes submissions through the form on its page, and the VFW programmes take an entry form and the essay at a participating local VFW Post.

  3. Age, grade and residency lines

Eligibility comes next: Oxford Agora is for ages 11 to 18, the Think Essay Prize for ages 15 to 18 by the closing date, the Vancouver Writers Fest elementary contest for grades 5 to 7 in British Columbia, and the Year 12 competitions for one school year.

  4. Length and form limits

Length and form come before the writing: Poetry Nation caps entries at 26 lines and 55 characters per line, Freethought Day wants a traditional haiku of 5, 7 and 5 syllables, and the Vancouver Writers Fest sets 1,000 words for elementary school entries and 1,500 for high school.

  5. Originality and one-entry rules

Originality and duplicates decide eligibility: the National Poetry Competition requires original work and excludes published poems from winning, while Power Poetry, Freethought Day and the Oxford Royale Essay Competition each limit an entrant to one entry, or one poem per slam.

Questions

Are writing contests worth entering?

Writing contests are worth entering when the organiser is named, the deadline is dated and the entry terms are stated in full. Awards are narrow: The New Quarterly's personal essay contest awards a prize for one essay, and Freethought Day's poetry scholarship pays a fixed sum to up to ten favorite entries. Oxford Agora lists free entry, so entering it costs nothing.

Are writing contests legit?

A writing contest is legit when the organiser publishes its rules and the rules match what an entrant is asked to do. The National Poetry Competition states its subject, originality and per-poem entry terms in its rules, and Hektoen International states its closing time to the minute.

Is the Unsealed writing contest legit?

Legitimacy is read from the organiser's own published rules, and this page reports none for a contest called Unsealed. The same four checks apply to it as to the contests named here: a named organiser, a dated deadline, a stated entry limit and a line on entry fees.

Is a creative writing contest the same as an essay contest?

A creative writing contest takes invented work such as poems and short stories, while an essay contest takes argument or personal essays, and some organisers run both under one name. The Vancouver Writers Fest youth writing contest accepts previously unpublished short stories and personal essays in the same contest.

Is a writing contest free to enter?

Entry terms differ by organiser: Oxford Agora lists free entry for ages 11 to 18, while the National Poetry Competition charges for subsequent entries in the same submission. The entry-fee line belongs in the published rules, and a contest that omits it has left the question a scam turns on unanswered.

Which essay contests close on October 1, 2026?

The 917 Society, Writer's Digest's Personal Essay Awards and Hektoen International all list October 1, 2026 as the closing date. The 917 Society takes essays that teachers send by email, and Hektoen International takes submissions through the form on its page until 11:59 PM CST.

What this page cannot do

This site runs no essay contest named here, cannot enter anyone into one and has no say over an organiser's deadline, an age line or a judge's choice. No entry route described here brings a placing with it, and where a contest's rules ban paid votes, no service changes that. Each organiser's own page holds the entry-fee line.

Two rulebooks: the platform's and the organiser's

A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organiser's. On CuteBaby, voters get ten free daily votes that expire at midnight, and an account needs a South African mobile number. Organisers then enforce their own terms: Darley may disqualify and replace a potential winner who does not follow its rules, and the Queen's Commonwealth Writing Competition disqualifies over-length entries automatically. An order for contest votes changes none of that.

Why a steady count reads as ordinary

Contest voting has a rhythm of its own. The Arizona State Fair includes live audience voting on every qualifying night, and the Ernie Ball contest measures online activity throughout its contest period. A count that builds across the window, from separate voters, matches that rhythm. None of this is a method for passing an organiser's checks, and an organiser can still disqualify an entry it doubts.

What the law covers, and what is turned down

In the United States, the FTC says a real sweepstakes is free and decided by chance, and that a skills contest can ask you to pay to play. Canada's Competition Bureau says a purchase requirement should be prominently disclosed. Those rules govern entry to a sweepstakes or promotion, and whether paying for votes in a contest is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. No order is taken for a sweepstakes or other chance draw, for a political ballot, or for a contest whose rules bar outside votes.

The refund rule and its limits

The part of an order that never reaches the contest's own count is refunded once the organiser's voting has closed. America's Favorite Pet calls its dates approximate and lets its operator extend deadlines, so that moment is the organiser's to set. A result, a disqualification and a voided vote are never refunded. At IODC, public votes and engagement do not by themselves decide the winners, and no refund changes how a contest weighs them.
